Dear Mr. Farrell,
I read your article, "Mormon Church faces SEC probe over past efforts to keep the size of its $100 billion investment a secret," with great interest and found it to be well-balanced, presenting both sides of the issue. However, I have a request regarding the use of terminology when referring to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
As you may be aware, the Church has requested that journalists use its official name, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in their first reference to the organization. If an abbreviation is needed later in the article, the Church requests that either "the Church" or "The Church of Jesus Christ" be used.
This request is made to avoid the use of nicknames like "Mormon Church" or "LDS Church," as these terms do not fully reflect the name of the organization and omit the important reference to Jesus Christ.
I understand that journalists often have to work with limited space and that shorter names or nicknames may be easier to use. However, I ask you to consider using the official name of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in your future articles and the preferred abbreviations mentioned above.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I appreciate your continued commitment to ethical and accurate journalism.
Best regards,
